| 2012-05-16: LHC Test4Theory@Home - Citizen Cyberlab: a new project accepted by the European Union |
| Dear all,
A few months ago we asked you for opinions on ways to combine projects like T4T with online learning. Your feedback was really useful for preparing a funding proposal on this theme, and it's a pleasure to announce that the proposed project, called Citizen Cyberlab, has been accepted by the European Commission. The project will involve a number of institutions in London, Paris and Geneva, including CERN ? you can read more about it in the first comment of this post. A specific goal for CERN in the project will be to build an educational game based on LHC@home. The project should start by the end of this year. However, we plan to start improving the links between LHC@home and online education already this summer, in a collaboration between Peer-to-Peer University (P2PU) and the Citizen Cyberscience Centre. I look forward to telling you more about that when the project kicks off in June. Best Regards, The team! |
| 2012-05-15: Einstein@Home - Einstein@Home GPU Application for ATI/AMD Graphics Cards |
| After more than a year of work by Oliver Bock, Bernd Machenschalk, Heinz-Bernd Eggenstein and other developers, we are pleased to announce the release of the first Einstein@Home application for ATI/AMD Graphics Cards.
This OpenCL application, which searches Arecibo data for new radio pulsars, is about a factor of ten faster than the same search running on a typical CPU. The application is currently available for Windows and Linux computers with Radeon HD 5000 or better graphics cards. We hope to have a version for Macintosh (Apple OS X 10.8, Mountain Lion) sometime this summer, but there are still some problems that need to be fixed or worked around. Volunteers who wish to run this application will need to install version 7.0.27 or later of the BOINC client. Please see this thread for more information, or if you want to ask questions. Many thanks to the AMD/ATI team for their support in the OpenCL software development effort. Bruce Allen Director, Einstein@Home |
| 2012-05-15: Einstein@Home - Einstein@Home volunteers discover three new radio pulsars in Arecibo data |
| Einstein@Home volunteers have discovered three new radio pulsars (J1901+0510, J1858+0319, and J1857+0259) in Arecibo PALFA data! Congratulations to:
John A. Lorimer Jr. (USA)
Ugur Munir Kir, Guzel Sanatlar Saatchi & Saatchi (Turkey)
Philipp Kählitz (Germany)
Termit (Russia)
Philemon1752 (Switzerland)
edgen (Russia)
Further details about these and our other newly-discovered pulsars can be found on this web page, and will be published in due course. Bruce Allen Director, Einstein@Home |
| 2012-05-14: SETI@Home Beta - If you're wondering what that sucking sound is.... |
| I'm freeing up some database space by running db_purge on results older than about 4 months. |
| 2012-05-13: SubsetSum@Home - validate issues |
| I think I found another validation issue, the previously issued workunits had an flag in the result xml file, and that is probably why the server wasn't finding those files in some cases. I've removed the flag so hopefully newly generated workunits won't have this issue.
I'm also looking into the problem with boinc clients > version 7 are having with uploading files. If anyone has any idea if there's some configuration I need to do server side about this any input would be appreciated as well. :) |
| 2012-05-13: FreeHAL - Servers seized, one is back |
| Our regular servers are currently offline after the German police seized them in March/April because they thought a hacker could have abused them for illegal purposes. In fact, there was a hacker on one of my private PCs only, but not on the servers. But the investigations are still going on and can take some months. One of the servers is back now, the others not yet. Many thanks to Elton Chung from ReactOS for hosting a boinc database and download mirror and for creating the source code backup at Google Code! |
| 2012-05-12: Moo! Wrapper - Fresh subspaces ahead! |
| We have been processing key blocks from a fresh subspace for few days now. This should help with any problems caused by the previous more or less fragmented work units we've been sending out. Thanks for sticking with us through the bumpy times.
You can read the upstream announcement at http://blogs.distributed.net/2012/05/04/15/23/bovine/. Let's keep our CPUs and GPUs hot with work! :) |
| 2012-05-12: MilkyWay@home - N-body screensaver available for testing |
| I wrote a screensaver for the nbody application. You can manually install it and try it from here: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/download/nbody_0.92/ (available for Linux, Windows and OS X 64 bit. OS X requires 10.7 Lion). It requires OpenGL 3.2 so it needs a DirectX 10 class GPU (Something newer than Radeon HD 2xxx or GeForce 8000 series)
The screensaver has various mouse and keyboard controls for viewing the simulations. A list of all controls can be accessed by pressing the h or ? keys. You can manipulate the camera by dragging with the mouse and zooming with the scroll wheel. There are a couple of known problems which you may run into:- For workunits with larger timesteps, it seems very jumpy. There's an option to update at some interval instead of at every opportunity. There is another option to stop the simulation to wait for the graphics, so that every timestep is drawn as a frame and the animation is smooth. - The orbit trace view will not do what you expect except when using the option to stop the simulation for the graphics - The optional axes are ugly - The preference descriptions aren't very goodI added a bunch of preferences to the web project preferences, but they're not quite finished yet (e.g. the default values don't show up in the boxes when you don't have them set). I made a small demo video a while ago demonstrating it: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/download/random_stuff/nbody_graphics_sample.mp4 Try it out, and see if you like it! If you run into any problems or have any recommendations for future versions, please leave a comment below. |
